EMC’04/Sendai STUDY ON EFFECTIVNESS OF WAVE ABSORBERS FOR 5.8 GHz DSRC APPLICATONS ON EXPRESS HIGHWAY

Recently, electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers had been proposed to improve EM environment of Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) systems for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) applications. In this paper, the ray-tracing method, which has been widely used to study the radio wave propagations on terrain profiles, is employed to study EM environment when wave absorbers are installed on the sidewalls and the pavement of the express highway. The validity of the employed model is discussed by the comparison with the actual measurement on an outdoor experiment. The analysis shows that the possible undesired communication between a running vehicle and DSRC antenna is improved by increasing EM wave-absorption capabilities of pavement and sidewalls.
